Review of 'Unlocking Parental Intelligence' on 'Goodreads'

Two hours in, and it turns out that the gist of the book is: realize that you as a parent have feelings, realize that your child has feelings, and realize that they might not be the same. Thank you, Captain Obvious! I dropped it after that, after listening to the introduction of the first story, I wasn't confident I would get anything out of this book.

Deus ex machina in pure form. In every chapter a new non-physical phenomenon is introduced. First an electric monk, then ghosts, time traveling and alien civilizations pop out of the blue into this story.

William MacAskill: Doing Good Better (Paperback, 2016, Avery) 5 stars

What an eye opener! It is about how to have as much impact as possible with a limited amount of time and/or money for doing good in the world, advocated by a movement called Effective Altruism.

The book consists of two parts. The first part is about the principles behind Effective Altruism. Since I was already familiar with these concepts, it was nice to read but not world shocking to me.

The second part is how to bring these principles into action. Even though I had been reading about this before, it still surprised me in how many areas I am actually not following these principles. This part of the book is pure gold.

I think this book is a must-read for everybody who is interested in doing some good in the world, no matter how much.

I now feel like I have been playing around with a chess board …

The world building was great, but the story not so much. The synopsis has potential, the setting is original, but yet, after 21 hours of listening, I never had the feeling I was pulled into a story.

Joanna Faber, Julie King: How to Talk so Little Kids Will Listen (2017, Scribner) 3 stars

I found the tips useful, and love the tons of examples that come with it. The same tips come back over and over again, which is good, it shows how to use them in different circumstances. Somehow I found the tone of voice and storytelling over-the-top American, so a bit off-putting for a European.

Review of 'The Teaching Company: How to Listen to and Understand Great Music: Complete Set - 48 Audio CDs with Course Guidebooks (The Great Courses: Fine Arts and Music, Course # 700)' on 'Goodreads'

Very interesting, engagingly told by the author. Not the deepest in music theory, more about biographies of composers than I had anticipated.

Sean M. Carroll: The Big Picture (2016) 5 stars

Review of 'The Big Picture' on 'Goodreads'

I had expected a very broad book about a lot of different stuff, like Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything. Instead, this book took me by positive surprise by explaining what science has to say about the big things in life. It's more a philosophy book than a science book, giving science a place in human life. I especially like the vocabulary of poetic naturalism, an idea that I already embraced but didn't know had a name.

Julia Galef: The Scout Mindset (Hardcover, 2021, Portfolio) 4 stars

Review of 'The Scout Mindset' on 'Goodreads'

The title is perfect. I had expected a book how to be a better scout, but it is a book about how to get in the mindset of being a better scout. Julia Galef illustrates her points with tonnes of anecdotes and snippets from the internet, which wouldn't hold up to make proper rational arguments, but are perfect to illustrate her point and paint the picture.

Even though I knew what I would be getting into, I still felt from time to time a physical discomfort in my stomach when reading (listening to) this book. This book offers yet another hard and painful realization how bad the meat industry is. After some time, the facts in the book will disappear from my mind, but the feeling will remain.
