If anything I enjoyed it more this time round, although as in many of Terry's works there are bits that seem rushed and give me the feeling he had more to say but maybe was worried that it would make the book too long.

Anyway, it was chilling to read the racism in the light of what is going on today in Britain with Brexit and in the US with Trump. The same phrases, the same casual attitude to a 'lesser' race that the majority just don't understand.

In a way having the goblins have such amazing talents (the idea of the noble savage?) didn't really add to the story as it made you feel that we should like them not because they were thinking beings but because they were talented artists...

The book does feel disjointed at times but it still manages to make you laugh and cry on …

Re-read this, and I couldn't put it down. However, not one of my favourites. The Summoning Dark solves nearly every single problem Vimes encounters, which removes a fair bit of threat from the book. This could have been as stifling as Night Watch but it turns out all problems are anticipated and magicked away.

Great to see Quirm though, the avec sounds delicious.

And back to the Pterry catch-up, finishing this one takes me to the end of the Guards sequence.
This was, of course, an actual delight. It is about 'othering', making some group 'other' and then treating them worse. As topical today, what with BLM happening and transphobia running amuck under the guise of feminism, as it was when it was written.
Vimes remains one of the great characters and you can see why Pratchett wrote so many books from his point of view.
This is funny, droll, heartbreaking, thrilling and fulfilling.
Thoroughly recommended.
